This seminar seeks to reflect on the rise of “crisis” as centerpiece of societies and a way of governing them today. The use of the notion of “crisis” to label a heterogeneous set of problems raises the question of the circulation of a specific vocabulary (emergency, critical situation, disaster, and so on), as well as dispositifs that seek to tackle these situations. We intend to question the process through which a wide array of situations become “crises”; in other words, we look at the process of shaping crises, which we define as the epistemic and political construction of a situation of disruption, caused by the breaking of an equilibrium which outcome is decisive for both individuals and society. To answer these questions the seminar offers an opportunity to take into account a large variety of cases, disciplines and approaches to elaborate a more general discussion. In addition, it will provide an excellent opportunity to cross STS with other disciplines (philosophy, anthropology, political science, international relations, political economics, etc.). 8 sessions will explore the process of “shaping crises” through a discussion of multiple cases and a comparison of different crises (climate change, food security, global health, etc.) and theoretical perspectives.
